“The Golden Compass”
So this is post three for the night (not to mention making a new page and adding some new links), I guess that I am on a roll or something.
About a week ago I finished one of my all time favorite books for the fifth time. That’s right I’ve read Phillip Pullman’s “The Golden Compass” five times, and seeing that my copy (the only copy I’ve ever read) is now ten years old that means that thus far I’ve read the book on average every two years since I got it. Now for some people it seems a bit absurd to reread the same book so many times but personally for me I love rereading I book that I really like. I find it kind of along the lines of re-watching a favorite movie, or looking at a favorite painting again and again. I am of the opinion that good art (all good art, literature, film, music, painting, etc) deserves reexamination because in the act of going back and experiencing it again one learns more about the artists intentions and ones own ways of interpretation. So going back to “The Golden Compass” I truly believe that this book present one of the most original stories in the whole of the fantasy genre, in fact I can’t think of any author besides J. R. R. Tolkien who was as creative with his or her stories (though admittedly Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time” and it’s sequels come very close).
Part of the reason why I chose to reread “A Golden Compass” this time was because in a few months the movie will be coming out. I am really crossing my fingers on this one because if it isn’t done well I’m going to be really disappointed, such a great book really deserves a well made and close-to-the-book movie.
Okay, I think that that is enough posts for one night.
