Burning my mouth due to lack of common sense.

I hate burning my mouth on hot food (and don’t think I’m saying this because I believe that there are some people who get up in the morning and say “boy I sure hope I scald my mouth on something boiling hot today. That would be super”). No I’m saying it because last night I took a bite into a bratwurst and some sour kraut and the boiling brat juice cooked the upper part of my mouth. Fortunately it was a delicious brat and so I couldn’t be too pissed at the time. but I am pissed today because the burn was substantial enough to make eating my cereal this morning quite an unpleasant process. Now here is the thing, really I don’t have anybody to blame but myself in this matter. While I like to think of myself as being relatively bright I admit that I am sometimes lacking in common sense. To demonstrate: Once I was sitting in a rocking chair in my parent’s living room and I looked down at the rockers as I went back and forth. With little to no thought I reached down and put my hand under the rocker and promptly crushed all my fingers. Boy did that fuckin’ hurt. So you see sometimes I do things without putting a lot of thought into it before I do it. In this way I often take large bites out of very obviously hot pieces of food. The worst burn I think I’ve ever sustained in this way was right after my college graduation a few months ago. My roommate and I had gone to get some pizza downtown. We ordered a tomato and feta (a personal favorite combo). As soon as the pizza had been brought out I grabbed a big slice and bit right in scalding both my tongue and mouth on molten tomato and mozzarella. The burn was so bad that I was deprived of taste for nearly a week (which for me really sucked because eating is one of my favorite pass times). I guess the lesson I am developing here for myself goes something like “stop being a ravenous idiot, nobody is going to steal your food while you wait a minute for it to cool down.” But so help me God, if somebody does try and steal my food while it cools, they better just hope I don’t have a fork in my hand.

  1. Funny thing that goes along with this post. The quote of the day on my gmail account says “First thoughts are not always the best.” that was by Vittorio Alfieri. Oh Mr. Alfieri, you speak so true.
