Garden Update!

Okiday, I feel obliged to take a bit of a break from my runing contemplation series this week (I’ll probably write part 4 this evening) and talk about something different for a bit.

Oh, I know, how about that huge garden Eliza, ryan, Dan and I were making?

Well yeah, the garden was made and planted and all that jazz, and as we now quickly approach the end of June the veggies have started to come in.  Over the past couple of weeks we have gotten summer squashes and zucchinis, some cucumbers, and various young peppers (esp. jalapenos).  Our basil bed has been out of control, and we’ve been able to harvest greens from out amaranth plants.  Our various vine beans are also beginning to produce (though it is still a bit early for any significant harvesting).  As far as I can tell, every tomato plant (of the 90 we have growing) has green tomatoes on it and they should start rippening up within the next couple of weeks.

It is all very exciting to get to start eating fresh organic produce.  But it has also been a lot of work; weeding, training vines, staking up fallen plants, putting tomatoes back in their cages, watering, etc.  Listen, I think gardening is great, and am super excited to be working on one this year, but it is far from an easy or passive endeavor.  If you want to grow a good garden and produce some tasty veggies you’ve got to your back into it some.  Now admittedly I think the hardest labor was the initial laying out and bed creation, but just becuase that is done and seeds (or seedlings) are in the ground, does not mean that you can just sit back and relax, you’ve got to keep up with it.

But like I said, I enjoy the garndening, even in this killed June heat we’ve been experiencing (and it is likely to get worse in July and August).  I’m hoping to do a bit of pickling soon, and I can’t wait for the fresh tomatoes.  Probably within a months time we are going to be overwhelmed with the amount of produce we are collecting.

Anyway, it is all very exciting and good and I wish I could show you pictures but I keep forgetting to bring my camera with me when I go do work (oh well).  Anyway, expect more updates as things continue to progress.  Maybe some good recipes or something.
